Dear Parents ~

As you know the second quarter is in full swing. We began the quarter studying Geometry in Math. We’ve studied angles, characteristics of polygons, congruence, and this week we’ll continue learning about triangles.

We’re focusing on narrative writing in Language Arts, and students will continue using the writing process as they write weekly narrative essays.

As to Reading, beginning in November, students will be required to turn in monthly book reports. The first book report will be due before the Thanksgiving break (on or before Nov. 21). A reading list and book report ideas will be sent home later this week. Please encourage your students to read daily as the best way to improve reading skills is to read.

We’re also shifting the focus in Spelling/Vocabulary to Vocabulary/Spelling. While we still want the students to spell their words correctly, the emphasis is now being placed on knowing and applying the definitions of the words.

In Social Studies, we’ve started learning about Reconstruction. This week we’ll focus on the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, as well as learn about sharecropping, Jim Crow laws, and the Freedman’s Bureau. We’re scheduled to conclude our study of this period of American history by taking the test on Friday.

Parent / Teacher conferences are being scheduled for Monday, Nov. 3, Wednesday, Nov. 5, and Thursday, Nov. 6. Conferences are scheduled to begin at 1:30 and every 20 minutes thereafter. I will begin contacting you this week to schedule times to meet with each of you. (Or feel free to contact me.)

Working together for student success,
Mrs. Pede
