Homework Update ~ Thursday, Jan. 22

Please note the changes (in red) for tonight's homework assignments.

We will be having a test for spelling only tomorrow. Spelling words are listed at the right.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Dear Parents,

Today marks the beginning of a new era in our nation’s history. It seems that Dr. King’s dream has finally become a reality. We have spent most of this day celebrating and acknowledging President Obama’s inauguration. Almost all of our lessons ~ from our PMP morning math about Ann Nixon Cooper (the 106-year-old voter President Obama mentioned in his acceptance speech in November) to the letter the students are writing the President for their Language Arts assignment ~ were designed to commemorate this historic occasion.

However, as the homework reflects, tomorrow we will return to our regular assignments.

CRCT Test Prep info: I hope you remembered to send in the $18 for your student’s copy of the Buckle Down math and reading books. These will be a great help during the three weeks students have off in the spring (just before the CRCTs!).

We are also preparing for the CRCTs by continuing to assign math vocabulary words. I have been assigning words since the beginning of the year, but very few students have recorded definitions for all of them. Please encourage your students to keep both their math vocabulary log and math notebook up to date.

Reminders: The IB Inquiry project, “People Initiate Changes that Affect Lives,” about turn of the century inventors and their inventions is due this Friday, Jan. 23.

The 3rd book report is due next Friday, Jan. 30.

As I mentioned last week, we will begin a class novel study of the book Bud, Not Buddy on Monday, Feb. 2. ALL of the students will need a copy of the book, so please begin planning to check the book out of a library or purchasing it from a bookstore. (Please let me know if you have problems getting it.)

Final notes: I’d appreciate it if any of you could donate notebook paper, tissues, paper towels, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, or hand soap (as they are no longer providing it in the restrooms ~ because students were emptying full soap containers on the floors, as well for budgetary reasons).

Parents, please make every effort to see that your student arrives to school on time so that they have ample time to complete their morning work. Our morning work is not just a time-filler; students are required to do it to review critical skills.

Working together for student success,

Mrs. Pede
